Lies, Dam Lies and Statistics. What is the Truth Regarding Statins?

Wednesday, May 28th, 2008

(If you torture data sufficiently, it will confess to almost anything. (Prof. Fred Menger))

If your car repair workshop told you to reduce the amount of oil in the engine of your car to well below the minimum level on the dipstick, I am willing to bet that even the most “non car savvy” of you might be a tad suspicious.

If they went on to tell you the measure will prevent engine seizures and improve control of the engine, you may suspect an ulterior motive! A call to customer services of the motor manufacturer would soon reveal this to all be untrue. But, medical “experts” can tell us equally outrageous tales regarding our health and we do not question them at all!

As I write this on 28th May 2008, the BBC is reporting “The number of adults prescribed cholesterol-busting statin drugs in England and Wales is set to soar under new national guidelines.” The statement goes on to say that The National Institute of Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) is asking GPs  to trawl through patient records to pick out “high-risk” patients who would benefit from taking statins.

Is it a coincidence that Dr John Robson, a GP and chair of the guideline group in NICE, received an award from Pfizer in 2004? Pfizer is a major US based manufacturer of statin drugs making billions of dollars of profits every year.

Let me declare my position. I am a layman. I do not hold a professional medical qualification. I am an intelligent and enquiring individual concerned about yours and my health. I therefore feel justified in challenging the published opinions of “experts” who seem to be perpetuating myths. I am not accusing them of telling barefaced lies. They probably believe they are doing the best they can.

But, let’s face it, most substances produced by pharmaceutical companies are alien substances to our bodies. Many of them are toxic. The number of people who actually die from either misdiagnosis or so-called side effects of drugs is alarming.

Please hear this! I am not anti-drug. Now this may surprise you, but I believe there is a place for drugs in emergency and short term treatment. You see I know what it is like to have a health scare from personal experience. The frame of mind at the time is possibly not cool and ready to spend a few days in research for natural alternatives! The first available appointment with the doctor is sought or worse you may find yourself in the emergency department of a hospital.

There is no doubt that the expert attention of medical professionals and the correct use of drugs can and does save lives. What “Natural-Health-Awareness.com” is about, is the twofold goal of raising the awareness of all individuals so that they can and should do more for themselves. Actually take responsibility for their health either post an event or be taking preventative measures that ward off the possibility of a health scare.

The problem as I see it and it is a view that is becoming widely held, is that our doctors only have the prescription of drugs as an answer to most problems. Yes, I know that is a generalisation and there are always exceptions but that is the general rule. If you do not to take drugs long term, where do you get advice on nutrition and lifestyle etc? Much of the advice from the NHS, and other institutions is based on outdated information especially regarding nutrition.

April 2008, in the Harvard Health Letter published by the Harvard Medical School, an article appeared entitled “You Don’t Have to Take a Pill! This surprising but pleasing article reports that a growing number of studies are showing that simple lifestyle changes including correct nutrition and exercise are effective remedies to combat several diseases. The list discussed was:-

  • Arthritis
  • Cholesterol (and heart disease, our inclusion.Ed.)
  • Cognitive decline
  • Depression
  • Diabetes
  • High blood pressure
  • Osteoporosis

All of these are or will be addressed on our website but for now in an unbiased way let us look at a few facts that I have been able to research in the arena of statination.

  1.  Cholesterol is not the cause of heart disease. This is seemingly becoming an accepted fact in the scientific and medical community. Cholesterol is a lipid or molecule that is an essential building block in the reproduction of cells. It is a waxy substance that is not water soluble in blood so from where it is manufactured in the liver, it gets carried around the body by lipoproteins. Cholesterol is essential in the body in the manufacture of hormones and cells as well as the repair and maintenance of cells.
  2. There is no such thing as “good” or “bad” cholesterol. Your doctor will tell you that LDL (low density lipoproteins) is bad cholesterol and that HDL (high density lipoproteins) is good cholesterol. LDL transports cholesterol to tissue. HDL returns it to the liver for reuse or excretion.
  3. Corrected nutrition is the preventative measure of choice. Small size LDL is associated with heart disease as they can get stuck between the cells that line the arteries. They can get rancid and cause inflammation. Scar tissue can build up and narrow the arteries causing heart attacks and strokes. The only known good way to regulate LDL particles is to eat well.
  4. Statin drugs may be misunderstood. There is a group of scientists and doctors who believe that the actual beneficial action of statins reduces inflammation and it is not the reduction of cholesterol that provides benefit. So is there a case for taking them anyway? Well due to the possible reduction in inflammation and the reduced propensity for narrowing arteries, heart attacks will decrease. Unfortunately, the evidence is that whilst death due to heart disease goes down in people taking statins, death from other causes goes up!

Concluded in Part two.

Healthy Eating

Wednesday, May 14th, 2008

Every day life expectancy now is increasing, and if some of the guidelines in this article were followed it may help you live a long healthy life. Just think how fantastic it might be to get to that magic one hundred years old.

Eating Healthy

Nutrition, vitamins and the right food can help you to live to a good age. The body needs food to function, and with a proper diet we will be helping vital organs to function correctly. But overeating is poor for the body and makes the heart work harder. Some health professionals claim eating the right healthy foods is more significant than exercising

Exercise Daily

If you exercise daily you can reduce the chances of getting brittle bones and stiff joints as you get older, and also with steady daily exercise you will give your heart a good workout. Now that helps you to continue a healthier lifestyle and things like stress and anxiety will be reduced with exercising.
If you have not exercised in a long while better to check out with your doctor first.Do not get into big workouts to start with. Doing simple arm lifts, leg lifts, even just stretching. Go up and down stairs if you are able to use stairs at a slow pace a couple of times. After a week you can introduce your body to a little more work out. Take your time.

Sleeping

Sleep helps with your body functions, less stress, and anxiety, wake refreshed. Get a good routine for sleeping, find out how much sleep you really need. During the day perhaps if possible you could take a 20 minute nap, which could help you feel better during the evening. Everyone is different so you will need to find out for yourself what your body requires for sleep.

Drink Plenty Of Water

Water will help carry away toxins, and other related things that your system does not need. Water is the only fluid that will really flush your system out. It is recommended to drink two litres of water everyday. Remember next time you are out and need something to drink. Stop and pick up a bottle of water. You will save money and your health with out sugar, carbon and other ingredients in a soda.

Stress, Depression and Anxiety

All of these are things you should really work on and think about how to reduce stress, depression and anxiety in their life. Not only is it harming you, it is causing stress to the heart. We need to learn to live with these things and learn to relax.

Keep that doctors appointment, see your doctor as often as they would like you to go. Have yearly check ups to assure that things are ok with you. We need to take an approach of preventive care.

Use good moisturizers and lotions to protect the skin from too much sun. Lotions and moisturizers will help keep healthy skin. As we age the skin will start to break down and thin out. GREAT SKIN CARE FOR THAT YOUNGER LOOK
Did you know that taking care of the Skin can help you feel younger? When you take care of your skin it helps you to look healthier, which promotes happiness.

We can discuss Skin Care , and offer you a few helpful tips to improve your skin to look younger, yet you will need exercise, diet, plenty of water, and possible supplements to live healthier and happier lifestyle.

Why skin dies:

Aging is one of the prime reasons that the skin begins to die. Yet, if you drink low volumes of water, the skin will not have the natural elements it needs to reduce aging symptoms. The skin also needs oils, moisturizers, vitamins, and minerals to stay healthy. As we grow older the epidermis begins to thin and becomes fragile. Our glands that produce oil decrease in secretion, as well as the blood vessels. Old cells are rarely restored as you grow older as well, which also increases symptoms of aging.

After you factor in genetics, sun contact, chemicals, poor lifestyles, excessive sun tanning, and so forth you will see why people look older than they truly are.

Tip:

When moisturizing the throat area always apply the lotions while using firm, and strokes that move upward. Always coat the neck and face with sunscreens that include SPF factors, especially if you visit the sun often. If you wear low-neck blouses often, ladies protect your chest area with sunscreens as well.

Hint:

Learn more about the types of pillows that can slow wrinkling around the chin, and neck area.

Tip:

Mayonnaise and Egg Whites and Yokes can tighten the skin. To mix stir until the formula is creamy.

The Enemies: Sun is the skin’s enemy . Be happy with what color God gave you rather than over bake in the sun. This will help you skin appear youthful for years to come. Still, some sun is healthy, since it provides natural proteins that enhance the flesh. Sun radiation, as well as other harmful ingredients incorporated into the sun will cause the skin to loose collagen, as well as elastin.

Tip:

Sunscreen is advised to reduce wrinkling caused from sun. Sunscreen primers, which include SPF, can also help to minimize wrinkles, crow feet, and fine lines. The broad-spectrum formulas work best.

Hint:

Wearing lip balms and lipsticks can help fight wrinkling of the lips, which comes from excessive contact of the sun.

Tip:

Wearing a hat when the sun is too much can help fight wrinkling, skin cancer, and so forth.

Now we can consider lifestyle. If you smoke it can cause you to age faster, as well as affect your health. If you want to live longer, healthier, and happier, stop smoking now. Support groups, hypnosis, and various remedies are available at the local pharmacy to help you quite smoking.
